Stay alert at night! Bed bugs may come calling

Bedbugs are small insects that feed on warm-blooded creatures. They are nocturnal and bed bug symptoms will be at their worst during the hour before dawn when activity levels peak. Bedbugs cannot fly and are not able to jump either. A bed bug infestation can be difficult to get rid of and without an agent called DDT it is nearly impossible to eradicate these pests completely.

How do Bed Bugs Feed?

Bedbugs normally feed at night. The creature has two hollow tubes running from an elongated beak with which it pierces human skin. Through the tubes the animal injects natural anesthetics into the skin before it draws away the blood. The feeding session takes about 5 minutes before the animal is full and a bedbug will feed every 5 to 10 days. After a feeding session the bedbug will return to hide in a dark place. The skin might react to a bedbug bite and you might feel a slight irritation. People with sensitive skin may experience a rash.

How to Recognize a Bedbug Infestation?

You can recognize a bedbug infestation by the following signs:
  • You will experience the symptoms of a bedbug bite such as itching or a rash.
  • If you use light colored bedding there w ill be blood stains on the sheet for bed bugs that were crushed during the night.
  • In addition to blood, dark stains from the creatures' fecal matter will also be present on the bedding.
  • When bed bugs are crushed their bodies emit a sweet scent you will be able to detect in the room.

Where are Bedbugs Found?

Bedbugs are mostly found in and around the bedroom. Examples of places where you may find bedbugs include:
  • Under items stored beneath your bed or under pillows and spare bedding stored near the bed.
  • In pillowcases and under pillows.
  • On your mattress and under your mattress cover.
