Top Tips for Controlling Mosquitoes

Since mosquitoes are the world's most common and annoying air borne insect, natural mosquito repellants and mosquito control systems are best selling pest control products. They exist to combat the presence of some 2,700 mosquito species. The three most common are aedes albopictus, culex pipiens, and anopheles quadrimaculatus.

Aedes Albopictus

Aedes albopictus, also referred to as the Asian tiger mosquito, is relatively small, with white scales on the legs and abdomen. It carries dengue fever, heartworm, and eastern equine encephalitis. Aedes albopictus is common in the eastern region and was brought to America from Asia in a shipment of tires that arrived in Houston in 1985.

Culex Pipiens

This is the regular home mosquito, which carries the West Nile virus to birds, animals, and humans. Culex Pipiens is a brown mosquito and has white marks on the mouth and legs. It is the most common of all the mosquito species.

Anopheles Quadrimaculatus

This mosquito is the carrier of malaria. It's brown and has three spikes on the head with white patches on the wings. Like all mosquitoes, it likes to attack during the night until the break of dawn. (Although thes e are the most common times to be bitten by a mosquito they well attack when the opportunity is at hand. Any time you approach standing or stagnant water you are entering their territory and will most likely be bitten.)

Mosquitoes Food Supply

Mosquitoes feed on blood. As they bite humans to draw out blood they in turn transmit diseases into the blood stream. Due to the ease with which they spread disease, keeping mosquitoes from proliferating in your hard and invading your home is a necessity.

Tips for Controlling Mosquitoes

Protecting yourself from mosquitoes is a combination of choosing the right kind of products and the correct clothing.

Use effective mosquito repellants

Repellants helps in reducing the skin's exposure to mosquitoes. Using repellants will enable you to continue to work and to play outdoors. You will find natural mosquito repellants, chemical based products, and electronic mosquito repellants.

DEET is the primary synthetic material used in mosquito pest c ontrol. DEET is made by Morflex Inc. and is bought by millions of people in America today as a primary ingredient of mosquito repellants like the popular line of OFF products. These products are sprayed on exposed areas of skin to discourage mosquito activity.

Some automated mosquito control products include the use of sounds and glowing lights to attract and eliminate the insects. Studies have shown that certain sound waves will drive mosquitoes away but are undetectable by humans. These products are small sound generating boxes with speakers that are placed in the outdoor area you will frequent, for instance the patio.

Glowing lights are also used. Normally the insects approach the light and are "zapped" by a small electrical charge. Some research had shown that these devices are more effective with moths and flies but many customers swear that they also work with mosquitoes.
